What did you want to be when you grew up? My childhood dream was to marry a Cardinal baseball player. Life had different plans, and during an unprecedented global pandemic, I founded my own venture, Bee Young Communications and Marketing. Today, my boutique marketing agency in Tampa, affectionately known as Bee Young Comms, marks its 5th Anniversary! In the dynamic landscape of marketing and communications, reaching this milestone is truly something to celebrate.

Achieving a 5-year anniversary is a remarkable accomplishment that many businesses aspire to but few attain in today’s competitive environment. For Bee Young Comms, this milestone represents five years of continuous evolution, successfully navigating challenges, and fostering meaningful client partnerships through unwavering commitment and innovative excellence.

From a small startup to an established agency

My transformation from a small startup to an established agency illustrates the impact of determination and passion. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that barely half of small businesses launched in 2019 made it to their 5th year in 2024. Nonetheless, that was before the pandemic’s impact. 

According to Harvard Business School professor Tom Eisenmann, the two most common reasons businesses fail boils down to “right opportunity, wrong resources” and the opposite: the right resources but the wrong opportunity. While buzz suggests Bee Young Comms materialized overnight, it actually represents decades of preparation and waiting for the perfect moment. Willingness to seek guidance

A key factor in Bee Young Comms’ success as a boutique marketing agency has been my willingness to seek guidance from industry veterans as well as Gen Z. The PRSA Indies have been instrumental in helping me develop personalized career strategies aligned with my professional objectives, showcasing my dedication to sustained growth. While the list of mentors is extensive, I’m particularly grateful to Gina, J.W., Mila, Carol, Jeremy, Jona, Amy, Wendy, Ric, Barb, Philip, and countless others. These mentorship connections have enabled me to forge valuable professional relationships. In return, I’ve maintained my two-decade-long commitment to mentoring college students.

Last spring brought a crucial decision point regarding my workload management. The challenge of being unable to handle multiple things at an event simultaneously needed addressing. During a client visit in Northern California, a morning walk in the sunshine sparked an innovative solution. After careful consideration, I decided to bring on an intern. I immediately reached out to Griffin Clark, an exceptional Boston College student whom I had previously supervised during my work with the Naismith Awards. Griffin has proven to be exactly what the agency needed – bringing intelligence, humor, creativity, and significant contributions to our business growth. While he views me as his mentor, the reality is that our mentorship relationship is beautifully reciprocal.

An opportunity to evaluate past achievements

It’s important to recognize that a work anniversary represents more than just another calendar date. As the founder of Bee Young Communications and Marketing, it provides me a valuable opportunity to evaluate past achievements while strategically planning for future growth and continued learning.

As I contemplate these five years of success, I’m equally focused on future opportunities. My key objectives for the upcoming months and year include:
